Perfect Peach Pie Contest 2017! Registration and Info

July 19, 2017

It’s that time of year again! Sunday, August 6th is the date for the Riverview Farmers Market’s 6th Annual Perfect Peach Pie Contest. If you’re an amateur baker with a favorite peach pie recipe, read on to find the contest rules and other basic information below.

We’re also planning a Market day full of live music, kids’ activities, peachy treats from our vendors, and more.

JC Families will be organizing a kids’ craft activity (make a paper peach pie!) and a visit from a bubble entertainer from 10:30-12.00.

All New Jersey residents are welcome. All ages are welcome to submit, but you must be an amateur baker, not a professional baker/chef.

Participants can submit home-baked peach pies or peach cobblers using Jersey peaches; no other dishes will be accepted.

Completed entry forms should be e-mailed to with the subject line “Peach Pie Contest.”

Entrants can also register and submit pies at the Market on the day of the event, at the registration/info table, until the 11:30 a.m. preferred deadline on Sunday, August 6th (no entrants will be accepted after 12 pm!!!).

By submitting your dessert, you are allowing the Riverview Farmers Market and New Jersey Peach Promotion Council to publish photographs of your dessert on their websites and in related press releases.

Remember, you must be a NJ resident and a non-professional baker (i.e., you do not make desserts for income/payment).

Judging will take place at noon on August 6th. Three winners will be selected by local judges. Judging criteria (established by the NJ Peach Promotion Council) will include: overall appearance, crust puffiness and color, arrangement of peaches (in open-top pies), aroma, filling color, filling taste, and crust taste.

Our four judges are:

– Enrique Arencibia, co-owner of Mile Square Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine
– Abby Denson, writer of the dessert blog The City Sweet Tooth and a cartoonist and travel writer (her newest book, “Cool Japan Guide,” is a fully illustrated cartoon guide to Japan!)
– Erin Kumpf, owner and practitioner of Erin Kumpf Acupuncture & Herbs on Central Avenue and musician in the local bands Twiddlin’ Thumbs and Jeb Jones
– Nick Lawrence, Treasurer of Washington Park Association of Hudson County, Inc

Prizes (donated by local businesses and sponsors) will be awarded at 1:30 P.M:

Guitar Bar Drum Den (a music-lesson gift certificate for each winner)
Choc O Pain Bakery & Café (a gift certificate for each winner)
The Lucky Honeybee (a handmade scented candle for one winner)
Dulce De Leche Bakery (a $50 gift card for one winner)
Modcup Coffee (a $25 gift card for $25 and a gift package worth $55)
Yoga in the Heights (one free month of yoga for one winner)

Market visitors will be invited to taste the contest entries after the prizes have been awarded.

Also, thanks to Remco Press of NJ for designing and printing our flyer for this contest and party!

Later this summer our first-place winner will take a second version of their winning pie to a final judging site (to be announced at a later date) for 2 grand prizes: one in south/central Jersey; the other in north/central Jersey. Grand prize winners each will receive prize money from the NJ Peach Promotion Council.

The New Jersey Peach Promotion Council is a non-profit voluntary organization of growers, shippers, wholesalers and associated industries dedicated to maintaining a viable peach industry in the Garden State for the purpose of preserving farmers and farmland; and to providing the highest quality and best tasting fresh peaches for consumers.
